Written Tycoon's Music Magnate Claims Doomben 10000
Progressive 4yo gelding Music Magnate capped a remarkable season for his sire Written Tycoon when capturing Saturday’s $750,000 Group 1 James Boag’s Premium Doomben 10,000 (1350) while crediting trainer Bjorn Baker with his first Group 1 winner.
Written Tycoon began the season without a winner at the highest level to his credit. The Woodside Stud resident now has three, with Music Magnate including the Golden Slipper hero Capitalist.
Aided by a frantic speed set by Two Blues and Fell Swoop, Kerrin McEvoy came with a well-timed run on Music Magnate to defeat the fast-finishing favourite Azkadellia by three-quarters of a length with Charlie Boy nosing out Delectation for third. (photo Lisa Grimm)
"Bjorn said to me before the start, it’s going to be a game of chess on horseback,” McEvoy said.
"It was that. I didn’t expect them to go that quick. I got a bit of a prat after they’d gone 50m, was squeezed-up and had to come back.
"But then I got into a nice rhythm. I knew they were going quick and I knew my horse would be strong late. Bjorn had him cherry ripe for today.”
Baker said the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm in a fortnight could now be the next stop.
"Queensland has been very kind to me,” Baker said.
"He’s had one or two issues. To be honest as a two-year-old he didn’t show me much, but he’s continued to improve. I love the Written Tycoons.
"We decided to miss most of the autumn. We had one crack at the Hall Mark and that was a phenomenal effort, then he had a month between runs going to Scone. I thought he was very well set up to run a good effort here today.
"We might have to look at the Stradbroke.”
The 4yo gelding advances his overall record to 6 wins, 4 seconds and 1 third from 12 starts for earnings of $825,125.
Music Magnate was a $45,000 purchase by his trainer from the Westbury Stud draft at the 2013 NZ Bloodstock Select Yearling sale.
He is the third foal of the Danehill Dancer (IRE) mare Concert Girl, a half-sister to Group II Wellington Guineas winner Marrok (Casual Lies) and the South African Group III winner Appeal Process (Volksraad).
The granddam of Concert Girl is the hugely popular mare Chalayer (Covetous) winner of the AJC St Leger and Group III Adrian Knox Stakes and placed in the Group 1 Sydney Cup, Group 1 VRC Oaks and Group 1 Canterbury Guineas.
Concert Girl has an unraced 2yo colt by Redwood (GB) named Stadium and a yearling colt by Redwood (GB).
She was bred back to Reliable Man (GB) last spring.
Written Tycoon covered 184 mares at Woodside Park last year at a fee of $19,800 and is fully booked this year at $49,500.
