Determined Dundeel filly wins the Wakeful.

3YO filly Victoria Quay became Dundeel's 12th stakeswinner when she took out the VRC Wakeful S. G2 on Derby Day at Flemington...

Victoria-Quay-HomepageThe 3YO filly Victoria Quay became Dundeel’s 12th stakeswinner with a resolute and classy effort in the $300,000 VRC Wakeful S. 2000m G2 at Flemington, defeating Personal & Tyche Goddess, with Arrowfield filly Miravalle (by Redoute’s Choice) running on late for fourth.

Trained by Tony & Calvin McEvoy, Victoria Quay has progressed rapidly from her August debut fourth at Morphettville. She won her next start over 1600 metres at Balaklava, then provided Dundeel’s son Ain’tnodeeldun with his sternest opposition in the 1800-metre Hill Smith S. LR on 10 October.

She has now franked that form with a quality performance on Derby Day, running the stiff Flemington 2000 metres in 2.01.96 – the second-fastest Wakeful time since 2001.

Jamie Kah said, “She gave me a super ride, she’s got a lot of class about her….gosh, she was strong late and found the line beautifully.”

Victoria Quay was bred by Danny Molloy, who retained a share in her after she was sold for a sale-topping $250,000 under the Rushton Park banner at the 2019 Magic Millions Adelaide Sale. The buyers were McEvoy Mitchell Racing, and managing agent Suman Hedge who also appears in the filly’s ownership.

She is the fifth winner and first stakeswinner left by the Danehill Dancer mare Swan River, whose siblings Count Encosta & Lieutenant were both Group 2 winners. They all descend from Ravissante, dam of the 1935 VRC Oaks winner Nalda and ancestress of Lord, the “King of Caulfield” in the late 1950s and early 1960s. More recently,  the family has produced Champion 2YO Earthquake.

Swan River has a yearling colt by Invader and foaled a full brother to Victoria Quay on 25 October. Dundeel has now sired five stakeswinners out of Danehill-line mares.

Victoria Quay and VRC Derby G1 runner-up Hit The Shot were the stars of a rewarding day for Dundeel, also represented by Truly Great who added his 5th win in Perth and She’s Ideel, 2nd in the $500,000 Rosehill Gold Cup.
