Understanding Ownership, the Joy and the Pitfalls

danny2Recently I was speaking to a friend who owns a share in a two-yearold colt the trainer had recommended be gelded. The trainer felt that the youngster was “too colty” in his work, which was hindering his training and future as a racing prospect. The colt was turned out for a spell while plans were put into place for him to be gelded, which included a sign-off from the group of owners, many of whom didn’t know each other.

My mate said he expected that the trainer’s recommendation would be adopted by all the owners, however, he was dismayed to find that some wanted the horse to remain a colt.

The Season of Snitzel

snitzel2014 bh 400It's the last day of the Australian racing season and if we've learned one thing in the past 12 months it's that Snitzel has well and truly stepped out of the shadow of his champion sire Redoute's Choice.

Whatever way you look at it Snitzel has had a remarkable season and will finish as Champion Australian Sire by earnings, winners and stakes-winners as well as champion 2YO Sire and 3YO Sire.

Arrowfield Stud have provided the following key statistics:

  • 29 winners of 36 Group & Listed Races worldwide – inc. 9 2YO SW
  • 26 winners of 31 G&L Races in Australia
  • 5 Group 1 winners: INVADER, REDZEL & RUSSIAN REVOLUTION (Australia), SUMMER PASSAGE (New Zealand) & HEAVENLY BLUE (South Africa).
  • Leading Sire by Aggregate at the Magic Millions ($13.9 million) & Inglis Easter ($21.0 million) Sales
  • Five $1 million+ yearlings, top price $1.7 million (achieved twice at Inglis Easter)
  • In all, 111 yearlings sold for $41.7 million (Average Price: $375,732).

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE MOST COMMON FORMS OF RACEHORSE OWNERSHIP

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE MOST COMMON FORMS OF RACEHORSE OWNERSHIP

Owning and racing thoroughbred racehorses can be highly enjoyable and rewarding, particularly if you are lucky enough to own a horse that progresses to winning races, and if your horse is a fashionably bred colt and just happens to win a Group 1 race, then a stud deal is likely to be available.

But it is also highly speculative, as owners are required to incur racehorses include that the horse may die, or value is diminished as a consequence of the materialisation of an inherent risk, including accident, illness, infertility or sub-fertility, injury, or natural cause, or simply not progress to competing in or winning any races or Prize money.

Snitzel Breaks Prizemoney Record

Four stakes wins in a day, a Group 1 2YO trifecta, a Group 1 quinella, the season record for 2YO winners, the Number 1 spot on the General, 2YO and 3YO premierships, a new prizemoney record - and it's only the middle of May.

Newmarket Bids Farewell with an Exceptional Finish

lastlotnewmarket 500An extraordinary fortnight – and 112 years of history – ended in style today when the gavel came down for the last ever time at Newmarket, capping off a remarkable select sales season for Inglis.

Jamie Inglis, company director and the eldest of the fifth-generation family still involved in the company, auctioned the final Lot in emotional scenes in the Newmarket sale ring. (Nervous Nellie - the last horse sold at Newmarket. Sold by Yarraman Park and bought by Bowness Stud for $26,000.)

It brought to an end a phenomenal period, which included:

*$254 million traded by Inglis since the start of the Classic Yearling Sale

*Among this, there have been 20 $1million Lots, of which only 24 have been sold in Australasia in 2017

*Inglis has sold $156 million worth of yearlings, weanlings, racing and breeding stock at Newmarket since Thursday 30 March
