Second Group One Winner for Sebring

criterion championWidden Stud's Sebring added a second Group I winner to his tally at Rosehill on Saturday when top class colt Criterion scored a well-deserved and dominant victory in the ATC Rosehill Guineas over 2000 metres.

A brilliant winner of the Group II ATC Todman Stakes at two, Criterion has been tested over the longer journeys as a three year-old by his trainer David Payne.

Second in the Group I ATC Spring Champion Stakes and fourth in the Group I VRC Victoria Derby last preparation during the spring, Criterion was second in the Group I VRC Australian Guineas at the start of the month and finally cracked it for a win at the elite level in the Rosehill Guineas.

Ridden patiently by Hugh Bowman, Criterion pounced on the leaders down the running and quickly raced away to win by more than three lengths over Thunder Fantasy.

"He's only just maturing now," said David Payne.

"You have to leave him alone in the run and not bustle him.

"He'll be winning the Derby hopefully. From day one we always thought he would be winning at 2000 metres plus."

Second Group One For Sequalo

Spirit of Boomx300Good things come to those who wait.

Just ask trainer Tony Gollan and the very happy and proud connections of Spirit Of Boom – second Group One winner for our wonderful stallion Sequalo.

Previously contesting no less than 14 Group One races, the ultra-consistent Spirit Of Boom had been placed at the elite level on four occasions including game seconds in the Newmarket Handicap and the Oakleigh Plate over the last few weeks.

Not always having the best of luck, Spirit Of Boom however had things go his way in the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley on Friday night – and, as Gollan said “it was a much deserved win.”

“He has given us such a great ride for such a long time,” he said – referring to the fact that Spirit Of Boom has been tough and durable; trademarks of the Sequalo breed.

“He has been racing for many seasons and he is enjoying it – he is a very tough stallion.”

Qatar Bloodstock Become Partners in Zoustar

zoustar cassidyElectrifying three year old Zoustar is back in full work and progressing ahead of schedule in what is likely to be his final campaign before retiring to Widden Stud in 2014.

ZoustarZoustarFollowing on from brilliant victories in the Group A ATC Golden Rose and Group I VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes, thus becoming the first horse to complete the double, a plan was put into place for the son of Northern Meteor to take on Europe's premier sprinters at the prestigious Royal Ascot meeting in June.

Widden's Antony Thompson is naturally excited about Zoustar's upcoming campaign and also explains the details of a new international partner in the horse.

Thompson said, "Zoustar's breath-taking performances in the spring caught the attention of Sheikh Fahad and he has negotiated to purchase an interest in Zoustar on behalf of Qatar Bloodstock in what is a major show of support for the Australian breeding and racing industries."

Qatar Bloodstock was founded in 2010 by Sheikh Fahad Al Thani who has already enjoyed great success in Australia through outstanding stayer Dunaden.
